Electronic Motor Starter EMS
Easy. Multi-functional. Safe.
The EMS electronic motor starter is Eaton's first multi-functional motor protection and control relay with a frame width of 30mm. The EMS is intended for starting and protecting motors with a performance range from 0.06 to 3 kW, while using as little space as possible.
The electronic motor starter unites four functions in a single device:
- Motor DOL start
- Reversing starter
- Motor protection to IEC 60947
- Safety-oriented drive stopping in accordance with Category 3 /PLe (ISO 13849-1), SIL 3 (IEC 61508-1)
Its main areas of application are the control and protection of motors in:
- Logistics and material handling systems, small elevators
- Packaging machines
- Production machines
- Machine tools
- Manufacturing machines.
The EMS is a multi-functional motor starter that replaces several conventional switching devices in the control panel. This minimises wiring and saves installation space. The standardised push-in terminal system, which allows main and control current cables to be connected and disconnected without tools, further simplifies assembly.
The push-in terminal type cuts the wiring time by 60%.The rugged enclosure concept allows a high short-circuit level of 50 kA and is therefore ideal for industrial use. With its built-in hybrid switching technology, the EMS has a contact lifespan of 30 million operations. Additionally, it offers the possibility of using a smaller control panel that can be produced quickly and cost-efficiently.

EMS with SmartWire-DT
Connecting EMS-…-SWD electronic motor starters to SmartWire-DT eliminates the time-consuming control wiring work that has traditionally been associated with this type of starter. In addition, it also makes it possible for the motor starters not only to to send valuable information concerning the motor feeder, but also to be controlled by a PLC via SmartWire-DT. Moreover, these electronic motor starters can safely switch off motors with a level of up to SIL3/ PLe without requiring any additional switchgear in the corresponding motor feeder.
